Songs (choral)

Sweet and kind

A setting of words from Thomas Ford’s Mvsicke of svndrie kindes, written as a belated wedding present for friends who had met as members of the same choir. It seeks to capture the harmonic style of a lost, bygone age…

Blaydon races

An arrangement of the well-known Tyneside anthem but as you’ve probably never heard it before. Not for the faint-hearted in terms of endurance alone (although it starts innocently enough).

A relatively straightforward piece and easier than it looks, it was written for an Open University summer school and a scratch choir of mixed abilities who performed it on just a few sessions’ rehearsal. (Words anonymous, late mediæval English.)
